Being based in Chicago, United miles are incredibly valuable for me as United has a massive presence here.
A lot of people don’t understand that you don’t have to travel full-time to rack up huge frequent flyer mile balances. You don’t have to be a travel blogger or an executive who’s constantly in the air to accumulate airline miles. There are plenty of creative ways to get United miles, Delta miles, American miles and every other airline’s frequent flyer miles without actually hitting the road.
The easiest and most effective way to quickly earn those airline miles is through airline credit cards and their sign up bonuses. When it comes to United, you have two options (United actually offers four credit cards but only two come with lucrative sign up bonuses. See below):
50,000 bonus miles (offer ends June 30th!, will most likely drop back to 30,000)
30,000 bonus miles
Now. United cards are not your only option. Chase Ultimate Rewards Points are also a 1:1 transfer partner of United. This means that any non-branded credit card that earns you Chase Ultimate Rewards points can be transferred to your United miles account. My favorite card in this category and the workhorse of my wallet:

Its 2016 and everyone shops online. I personally buy everything and anything online. Gone are the days of going into a store to try on clothes for me. I buy online. And when I buy online, I make sure I’m earning miles and maximizing the amount I get. Airline shopping portals allow you to earn miles with your online purchases.
Earning United miles is easy when shopping online. All you have to do is visit the MileagePlus Shopping Mall. Below is a step-by-step guide to using the United Mileage Plus Mall. For example purposes, lets say you’re shopping at ebags.com.
- Search “ebags” in the seach field. (The current offer is 4 miles/dollar)
- Click the yellow “Shop Now” button
***Tip – Flowers are always a big airline miles earner. FTD.com currently offers 30 miles/dollar! That’s massive. Go out and get some flowers for your loved one, mother, boss or whoever & earn a big chunk of miles doing it!
United’s MileagePlus Dining program allows you to earn miles when eating out at participating restaurants. United has partnered with over 11,000 restaurants to help you earn those United miles! All you need to do is set up an account, find a participating restaurant and eat!
The normal rate is 1 miles/dollar spent but if you subscribe to the dining program emails that jumps to 3 miles/dollar. In addition, once you dine 12 times in any given year, you’ll start earning 5 miles/dollar spent! If you eat out a lot, sign up for this program. If you’re lucky, you’ll get an email notification that you’ve earned miles even when you had no idea the restaurant you ate at was a participating restaurant!
